Longshan Temple in Taipei – photos

Longshan Taipei

Longshan Temple is one of the most famous and recognizable religious buildings in Taiwan. If you were looking for it on the map of Taipei, it is located in the vibrant Wanhua district. The temple was built in 1738 (almost three centuries ago!) in the traditional Chinese siheyuan layout. This means it consists of three main pavilions arranged parallel to each other and surrounded by smaller buildings. The complex faces south, and its central part features the majestic main hall with a statue of the goddess Guanyin.

The architecture of Longshan Temple is simply stunning. Just look at the intricately carved figures of dragons and phoenixes on the roof — their purpose is to guard the temple’s safety. Also, take note of the colorful mosaics made of porcelain, clay, and glass. They are truly impressive, right? Even the columns supporting the structure are like works of art. In many places, there are also realistic paintings. All of this makes Longshan Temple regarded as one of Taiwan’s greatest architectural masterpieces.

The walls and the structure of the building are covered with Chinese verses, proverbs, and poetry excerpts. You’ll find both religious verses and folk sayings that remind visitors of values like compassion, wisdom, and peace. This highlights the spiritual and philosophical character of the place. If you don’t know Chinese characters, you won’t understand much — unless you use a translator (which is very useful in Taiwan!). These texts not only create a reflective atmosphere for visitors but also add an artistic expression to the space.

Taiwan temples

What is most interesting for us is that Longshan Temple is a place of multi-faith worship – it honors Buddhist, Taoist, Confucian (and not only) deities. The most important figure is, of course, Guanyin, the goddess of mercy, whose statue is located in the central pavilion. She attracts the greatest attention from the faithful. The temple also houses altars dedicated to deities such as Mazu – the sea goddess, the God of Literature, the God of War, the God of the Earth, and the God of the City. Their presence confirms that Longshan is a meeting place for different religious traditions.

Taiwan sightseeing

Ceremonies in the temple take place every day, with a particularly special atmosphere during the morning and evening services. The faithful gather to sing prayers together in deep, low tones, which helps participants enter a state of deep concentration, sometimes even a trance. The ceremonies are, of course, accompanied by clergy in their distinctive robes. At certain moments, the scent of incense fills the air, adding a mystical dimension to the entire space. The religious atmosphere gives the temple a magical quality.

At Longshan, the faithful not only participate in services but also offer abundant gifts. Among these are flowers, fruits, sweets, snacks, and even non-perishable food. The believers believe that making offerings to the temple will bring them prosperity and blessings. Longshan is not only a magnificent tourist attraction but also a center of religious life for the people of Taiwan. Regardless of the religion you practice (or if you have none), it is worth participating in the ceremonies held at this temple. When in Taipei, make sure to visit this place.

Longshan Temple – Taipei – interesting facts and tips

  • The goddess Guanyin originates from India, where she was initially depicted as a male. It was only after being “transferred” to China that she began to take on a female form. Some texts mention that Guanyin can take up to 33 different forms to help people — including male, female, secular, and religious forms. Her name can be translated as “She who hears the cries of the world.” It is believed that she listens to the prayers of the suffering and helps those who call upon her.
  • Longshan Temple has been destroyed multiple times. It has fallen victim to earthquakes, lightning strikes, and armed conflicts. Each time, it was rebuilt by the devoted people of Taipei.
  • When visiting, it’s important to show respect for those who are praying and to follow the rules of places of worship, such as wearing appropriate attire and maintaining silence. The faithful have no objections to taking photos or recording videos, but make sure to do so in a way that does not disturb anyone.
  • Before entering the temple, there is a charming artificial waterfall. It’s a very photogenic spot.

Longshan Temple in Taipei – opinions / reviews

  • Patrix – 10/10. It’s fascinating that followers of many different religions can come together in one place. The architecture is truly impressive! It looks even better than in the photos and videos online. Every detail is stunning. The temple is colorful and full of life. If you happen to be in Taipei, you absolutely have to visit it.
  • Wiolczix – 10/10. Asian temples represent an otherworldly dimension of architecture. These structures look epic, especially when we look closely at their details. We were lucky that during our visit, a religious ritual was taking place – even though we didn’t understand any of it, it was an interesting, mystical, and even somewhat mysterious experience. I recommend it to everyone.
