The Botanical Garden in Powsin, Warsaw – photos
It was on a beautiful May day. The temperature unexpectedly jumped, and all over the country it was finally possible to bare the calves and not freeze. The Travel-Mates Team set off in search of another adventure with a smile on their faces. Their landed nearby – in a secret garden located less than 20 kilometers from the center of Warsaw.
Actually, not so secret. The Botanical Garden in Powsin is a regular hero of one of the most popular TV breakfast shows. Well, no wonder. On the area of 40 hectares there are a lot of plant species. Both exotic or European ones. Those known to us from our own gardens or forests. About 27 hectares are available for sightseers. It’s a huge piece of land! (Remember that a hectare is 10,000m2, i.e. a square with a side length of 100 m).
The first point of our trip was the mountain trail. Yes, you read that right, a mountain trail in completely flat Mazovia. Such things only in Powsin! How to get there? Behind the ticket office at the seasonal entrance, follow the straight path lined with azaleas and rhododendrons. You can easily recognize the mountain trail by the hills, boulders and large stones. A little climbing will do you good and will allow you to get acquainted with the mountain vegetation (including the Tatra Mountains). In the photo below, a satisfied climber from the Travel-Mates Team, freshly climbed one of the peaks of the Botanical Garden of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
In contrast, after a trip to the mountains, we head straight to the tropics. We mean the conservatory. Plants of impressive sizes and shapes are enclosed in several greenhouses. No matter what the temperature is outside, be prepared that the buildings shown below will be ultra-warm. And depending on the species present in the room either megahumid or superdry.
Palm and cactus lovers will surely be satisfied with the rich offer of the conservatory of the Botanical Garden. Below is just a small fragment of the peculiar flora of this place. It may not look like the Colombian Cocora Valley or the American Saguaro National Park (for the uninitiated: these are places with the highest palms and cacti in the world), but it is still something to delight the eye.
This is not the end of exotic accents. In the Botanical Garden in Powsin you will also have the opportunity to wade through dense thickets. Almost like in a humid equatorial forest. Wiolczi was moved when she noticed the papyrus (see photo). She tried many times to grow a potted copy at home, but unfortunately each time … it withered. In Powsin they get better care.
After leaving the conservatory, we had to cross the water reservoir. It wasn’t super easy, because instead of a classic bridge, the banks are connected by a stony path. So you have to deftly jump from rock to rock to cover the entire distance. Fortunately, they are not too far from each other, so we managed to complete the task with dry feet, without checking the depth of the reservoir. For the youngest walkers, overcoming the path is a lot of fun, but also causes a bit of fear.
Do you dream of going to Asia? Start with Powsin. The cherry collection ‘Reiwa Sakura Teien’ is a Polish substitute for Japan. In spring, the trees look and smell amazing. In the Botanical Garden near Warsaw you will also find a large Chinese gazebo. You may like it more or less, but it’s definitely an interesting, oriental accent of the garden. Worth photographing.
While on a trip to Powsin, turn off your phones, slow down and just catch the moments. Take it easy and commune with nature. We not only saw it up close, but also captured it in the photos. When was the last time you had time to relax and take a look at insects in the heat of work? Or just lay it on the lawn and inhale the scent of flowers? We assume that many of you have done it recently in your childhood… The botanical garden is the perfect place for such spontaneous actions.
Have we already mentioned the fauna of the Botanical Garden in Powsin, Warsaw? In addition to insects, you will hear and see many species of birds singing in the treetops. The permanent residents of the facility are also water ducks that carelessly walk around, completely uninhibited by the presence of people. For those seeking rest or tired of sightseeing, there are some benches where you can sit in the shade of trees and enjoy the beauty of the landscape.
Botanical garden – the most interesting plants and more
The botanical garden in Powsin surprised us with really interesting specimens that we haven’t seen in real life either for a long time or never. Want to see our top 5?
Number 1: giant lemon. We both have quite large heads – so think about how huge this fruit must have been. You won’t buy a large one in the store.
Number 2: a perfectly floating grass snake. We are not herpetologists (the Internet says that is the name of a reptile specialist), but we learned to recognize a grass snake in elementary school. Nobody told us then that these snakes are great in water. And now the task for you: find the animal in the picture.
Number 3: a mysterious plant with unusual leaves. It may not be visible in the photo, but this species strongly stands out from its colleagues from the greenhouse. First of all, the lush green color and ‘fluffy’ texture. It looks like an exotic nettle in real life.
Number 4: a flower that looks like it was chiseled by Michelangelo himself. It gives the impression that it came to us from another planet. Its individual elements don’t fit together at all, but they compose perfectly and create an original composition.
Number 5: mushroom. Big as a hand. Slightly time-worm (or rather pest-worm), but really solid size. If it wasn’t for the fact that you can’t take anything home from the botanical garden, we probably would have fried it in a pan long ago. It looks impressive and delicious.

- For your own safety: do not touch or pick any plants. Some species are poisonous. (Of course, the non-poisonous ones should not be destroyed either – it seems obvious, but not everyone remembers about it.)
- For the safety of the floating inhabitants of the garden: do not throw coins or food into the water. We mean both a pond in the greenhouse and any water reservoirs outside. It doesn’t bring happiness to the animals, and they are also properly fed by the staff. The only thing they can get is stomach problems.

- Wiolczix – 10/10. At the beginning, a fun fact from my life that I haven’t had the opportunity to share yet: I have had a sinus problem for many years, and therefore a strongly weakened sense of smell. In the botanical garden, even I smelled a whole range of beautiful scents. For these unique experiences, I award the botanical garden in Powsin maximum points. What else do I like? Huge variety and richness of vegetation. There are blooming rhododendrons, beautiful magnolias, colorful azaleas, flora of the mountain trail, collections of roses, exotic cacti and even a cherry blossom near the Chinese gazebo. We came to Powsin on a hot, sunny day. The temperature literally blew us away – at some point we just lay down on the grass, closed our eyes and did a real aromatherapy. Great experiense.
